Nokia Lumia Family

The Lumia series is a line of smartphones and tablet computers designed and marketed by Nokia. Introduced in November 2011, the line was the result of a long-term partnership between Nokia and Microsoft as such, all Lumia smartphones run the Windows Phone operating system, aiming to compete against the iPhone and Android-based devices. The Lumia name is derived from the partitive plural form of the word 'lumi', which means 'snow' in the Finnish language.

On 3 September 2013, Microsoft announced its intent to acquire Nokia's mobile device business, expected to close in early 2014. As part of the deal, Microsoft will acquire rights to the Lumia and Asha brands from Nokia, but will be unable to use the Nokia brand on future devices following the acquisition. The following month, Nokia extended the Lumia brand into tablets with the unveiling of a Windows RT tablet under the brand.

History
From 1988 to 2012, Nokia was the largest vendor of mobile phones in the world, which included early smartphones built on its Symbian platform. However, in recent years, its market share declined as a
result of the growing use of touchscreen smartphones from other vendors, such as Apple's iPhone line and Android-based products. In 2010, its market share had declined to 28%, and in April 2012, Samsung Electronics (a prominent user of Android) ultimately overtook Nokia as the largest mobile phone vendor in the world.

In February 2011, Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop and Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer jointly announced a major business partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, which would see Nokia adopt Windows Phone as its primary platform on future smartphones, replacing both Symbian and MeeGo

Nokia unveiled its first Windows Phone 7-based devices, the mid-range Lumia 710 and high-end Lumia 800, on 26 October 2011 at its Nokia World conference.[7][8] Motivated by requests from the U.S. carrier AT&T for an LTE-enabled device, Nokia quickly developed the Lumia 900 as a follow-up, first unveiled at the 2012 International CES

In early 2012, Nokia released the Lumia 610, a new entry-level device taking advantage of the lower system requirements introduced by Windows Phone 7's "Tango" update. These new low-end devices were intended to improve Windows Phone adoption in emerging markets such as China. Later in September 2012, Nokia unveiled the Lumia 920, its first device to use the second generation of the Windows Phone platform, Windows Phone 8. The Lumia 920 also notably featured Qi wireless charging, NFC, and a "PureView" camera with optical image stabilization.

In 2013, Nokia also introduced the Lumia 925, a revised version of the 920 with a slimmer build incorporating aluminium, and the Lumia 1020, which features a 41-megapixel camera based on technology from its Symbian-based 808 PureView.

On 3 September 2013, Microsoft announced its intent to acquire Nokia's mobile phone business (including rights to the Lumia and low-end Asha brands) in an overall deal totaling at over US$7.17bn. Stephen Elop will also step down as Nokia's CEO and re-join Microsoft as its head of devices as part of the deal, which is expected to close in early 2014 pending regulatory approval. While Microsoft will license the Nokia name under a 10-year agreement, the company will only be able to use it on feature phones such as the series. These changes will result in future Lumia models being first-party hardware produced under the Microsoft brand.
On 22 October 2013, Nokia extended the Lumia brand with the unveiling of the Lumia 2520; running Microsoft's Windows RT operating system, it is Nokia's first tablet.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a professional graphics and image editing software package developed and published by Adobe Systems. Adobe distributes Photoshop in Windows and Macintosh versions.

INTRODUCTION:

Adobe's 2003 "Creative Suite" rebranding led to Adobe Photoshop 8's renaming to Adobe Photoshop CS. Thus, Adobe Photoshop CS6 is the 13th major release of Adobe Photoshop. The CS rebranding also resulted in Adobe offering numerous software packages containing multiple Adobe programs for a reduced price. Adobe Photoshop is released in two editions: Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Photoshop Extended, with the Extended having extra 3D image creation, motion graphics editing, and advanced image analysis features. Adobe Photoshop Extended is included in all of Adobe's Creative Suite   offerings except Design Standard, which includes the Adobe Photoshop edition.
  • Developer(s)  : Adobe Systems
  • Initial release : February 19, 1990;
  • Stable release : CS6 (13.1.2), available as a perpetual software license; CC (14.0), available for rental only / 18 June 2013;
  • Development status : Active
  • Written in : C++
  • Operating system : At least Windows 7 or Mac OS X 10.7
  • Platform : IA-32 and x86-64
  • Available in : 27 languages
  • Type : Raster graphics editor
  • License : Proprietary
  • Website : adobe.com/photoshop
Alongside Photoshop and Photoshop Extended, Adobe also publishes Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Lightroom, collectively called "The Adobe Photoshop Family". In 2008, Adobe released Adobe Photoshop Express, a free web-based image editing tool to edit photos directly on blogs and social networking sites. In 2011, a version was released for the Android operating system and the iOS operating system, followed by a release of a version for Windows 8 in 2013.

Photoshop's primary strength is as a pixel-based image editor, unlike vector-based image editors. Photoshop also enables vector graphics editing through its Paths, Pen tools, Shape tools, Shape Layers, Type tools, Import command, and Smart Object functions. These tools and commands are convenient to combine pixel-based and vector-based images in one Photoshop document, because it may not be necessary to use more than one program. To create very complex vector graphics with numerous shapes and colors, it may be easier to use software that was created primarily for that purpose, such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW. Photoshop's non-destructive Smart Objects can also import complex vector shapes.

File format:
Photoshop files have default file extension as .PSD, which stands for "Photoshop Document." A PSD file stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. These include layers with masks, transparency, text, alpha channels and spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings. This is in contrast to many other file formats (e.g. .JPG or .GIF) that restrict content to provide streamlined, predictable functionality.

A PSD file has a maximum height and width of 30,000 pixels, and a length limit of 3 Gigabytes. The .PSD file format can be exported to and from Adobe's other apps like Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects, to make professional standard DVDs and provide non-linear editing and special effects services, such as backgrounds, textures, and so on, for television, film, and the web.

Language availabilities:
Photoshop is available in more than 20 languages. These are the following:
Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian. Also Arabic and Hebrew as of Photoshop CS6.

Photoshop plugin:
Photoshop functionality can be extended by add-on programs called Photoshop plugins (or plug-ins).
Adobe creates some plugins, such as Adobe Camera Raw, but third-party companies develop most plugins, according to Adobe's specifications. Some are free and some are commercial software. Most
plugins work with only Photoshop or Photoshop-compatible hosts, but a few can also be run as standalone applications.
There are various types of plugins, such as filter, export, import, selection, color correction, and automation. The most popular plugins are the filter plugins (also known as a 8bf plugins), available under the Filter menu in Photoshop. Filter plugins can either modify the current image or create content. Below are some popular types of plugins, and some well-known companies associated with them:
  • Color correction plugins (Alien Skin Software, Nik Software, The Plugin Site, etc.)
  • Special effects plugins (Alien Skin Software, Auto FX Software, Flaming PearSoftware etc.)
  • 3D effects plugins (Andromeda Software, Strata etc.)
  • Adobe Camera Raw (also known as ACR and Camera Raw) is a special plugin, supplied free by Adobe, used primarily to read and process raw image files so that the resultant images can be processed by Photoshop. It can also be used from within Adobe Bridge.

Windows 9 Release Date: November 2014

Windows 9 will be similar to the desktop OS, with plans to bring back the Aero interface as well, according to "WZOR." The user also added that Windows 9 will debut as soon as next year, ahead of previous expectations.

Microsoft communications chief Frank Shaw said Microsoft wasn't ready to talk about how often Windows might come out when we spoke to him in January, but he agreed "you have certainly seen across a variety of our products a cadence that looks like that; Windows Phone is a good for example of that, our services are a good example of that".
We don't know if Windows 9 will be available as an upgrade from Windows 7 that you can buy as a standalone product or if you'll have to have Windows 8 to get the upgrade. But it may not be with us for a while yet - Windows business chief Tami Reller has talked about "multiple selling seasons" for Windows 8, meaning that we'll likely have several versions of it.

Google Nexus 4

The Nexus 4 combines LG’s hardware with Google’s software in a powerful combo that Android fans have been waiting to get their hands on. Now that it’s finally here, let’s take a quick look at it.

Google Nexus 4 is based on LG Optimus G - launched in India in January this year - and the two share most of the hardware specs. You get a 4.7-inch True HD Plus IPS screen that supports 1280x768p resolution and 318ppi pixel density. Nexus 4 review unit we received runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), the latest version of the free mobile OS.

Google Nexus 4 runs on the stock Android 4.2, giving you software devoid of any apps that clutter the OS (Samsung Galaxy S4's gimmicky apps come to mind). We were curious about the features that the latest version of Android brought to the phone and we are glad to say Google has not disappointed us. Though a minor update, it adds a few new functionalities to the software.
You can see the changes starting from the lock screen itself. In lock screen mode, when you swipe to the left (do not drag the lock icon, but swipe from any point on the display), you can open the camera app. Similarly, a swipe to the right will allow you to see mails, calendar, clock, Google+ posts, text messages etc. You can set as many of these as you want on the lock screen and access the respective app from the lock screen mode.
Another new feature is drag-app-to-delete, wherein you just need to long press an app in the menu and drag it upwards to delete it. We feel it is a much simpler way of deleting an app compared to opening another app to perform this task. Google Now has also become more capable in the latest iteration of Android, giving us more accurate data even before we asked for it.
The feature we loved the most in Android 4.2 OS was offline voice typing. Google has included voice typing in its mobile operating system for quite some time, but offline voice typing is new. You do not need constant internet connectivity to make full use of this feature.
While sending SMSs, emails etc, you just need to click on the mic icon on the keyboard and start speaking when prompted to. When we used this function over a reliable Wi-Fi network, it delivered perfect results but became a little patchy when used offline. However, the voice-to-text interpretation was not too far off the mark and was acceptable for a new feature.
Overall, the phone seems extremely smooth and comes only with a few Google apps, such as Chrome browser, Currents, Maps, Messenger, Play Books, YouTube etc.

Camera and audio

An 8MP camera with LED flash is strapped to the back of Nexus 4. This snapper is not the best in its league and loses to Samsung Galaxy S III's shooter on all counts. While colour reproduction is good, the images are a little grainy for our taste, but not so much that you will not want to upload them on social sites. Contrast in the images we took was a little below par and details were a lot less as compared to the excellent camera of Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S. Lowlight photos of the phone were not good and the LED flash, though powerful, does not help its case much.
Battery Life
The battery life on the Nexus 4 is acceptable at best. It’s not the longest running phone I’ve used but with nominal usage tends to get you through a day without too much trouble.

Google Nexus

What is google nexus?

A line of smartphones and tablet devices developed by Google and various hardware partners.  The Google Nexus first debuted in early 2010 as the Nexus One, and today the line consists of the Google Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices.

Google Nexus devices are powered by Google’s Android open source mobile operating system. Devices in the Nexus series do not have manufacturer or wireless carrier modifications to Android (such as custom graphical user interfaces), and have an unlockable bootloader to allow further development and end-user modification. Nexus devices are the first Android devices to receive updates to the operating system. The Galaxy Nexus is one of the few smartphones recommended by the Android Open Source Project for Android software development. As of November 2012, the latest devices in the series are the Nexus 4 phone by Google and LG, and the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablet computers by Google with Asus and Samsung respectively.

1) What is Android?

Introducing Android
The world's most powerful mobile platform

Android is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005, Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance: a consortium of hardware, software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. The first Android-powered phone was sold in October 2008.

Android is open source and Google releases the code under the Apache License. This open-source code and permissive licensing allows the software to be freely modified and distributed by device manufacturers, wireless carriers and enthusiast developers. Additionally, Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of devices, written primarily in a customized version of the Java programming language.[15] In October 2012, there were approximately 700,000 apps available for Android, and the estimated number of applications downloaded from Google Play, Android's primary app store, was 25 billion. A developer survey conducted in April–May 2013 found that Android is the most popular platform for developers, used by 71% of the mobile developer population.

"Yesterday we had meeting on the Aakash. The generation 4 Aakash is ready, all the specifications are frozen," Sibal said while addressing at the Telecom Summit New Delhi.
The minister also said that around 12 manufacturers from around the world are ready to make the tablet in India.
"There is no problem in terms of manufacture. In fact lines are ready for manufacture, what they need is orders. Now that specifications are frozen, we hope that the Aakash will be available to the people of India by January 2014," he said.

BSNL Penta IS701R review

BSNL Penta IS701R review

The built quality is really impressive, looks sturdy, easy to handle and give you a firm grip. The tab is made of plastic and is light weight. The front side has 3 physical dedicated buttons and a VGA camera just above it. The power button, mini USB, 3.5 mm audio jack and TF card slot is present on one side. There is no HDMI port. This tab does come with built in speakers.

Display screen and touch quality
The display screen is 7 inches supporting 800 by 600 pixel resolution. The quality is not so good, not sharp enough. Move your head a little bit left or right and you can see the pixels. This is a resistive touchscreen which makes it very difficult to operate especially if you have used a capacitive tab before.
The touchscreen material is of matt finish and when you swap your fingers it feels as if it is moving a bit with your finger. As far as the touch screen response is concerned it is disappointing. Furthermore multi touch is not supported. The box pack says 800 x 600 pixel resolution but actually is 800 x 480 pixels.
Connectivity
There is a built in Wi-Fi which works good. It is switched off by default. The other option is to use a 3G dongle but make sure the model is supported. There is 3G dial app which I think works with the BSNL dongle or USB modem. I bought this tab without the BSNL scheme.
Camera
There is this front facing camera of VGA resolution which works with the camera app. You can click images, record videos and also video chat using Skype. There is one issue with the camera and that is the camera is placed on the edge so to get your face right in the center of the screen you need to tilt it.
Apps and Multimedia
This tab comes with some pre-loaded apps which will get you going plus the IS701R also supports android market place so you can download more apps as and when needed.
I could connect the USB pen drive and the tab detected it and was available via Video player and image viewer apps. I tried the 1080p HD video and worked pretty well. The only issue was the quality was not that sharp but still viewable and for Rs. 3999, it’s worth it.
Games
There is not GPU so you will not be able to play high end games but you can play the popular angry birds game, but you will need to download it as it does not come pre-installed. I found it difficult to play the anger bird game with the resistive screen.
Battery
When I opened the box pack the battery was fully charged. I will drain the battery and then plugin for a full charge and then will update this page.
Quadrant Benchmark
As expected without the GPU the scores are disappoint, 356 as compared with the Xtab A10 which got 1700+.
